Korean webtoons over the past two weeks were led by a familiar split: romance fantasy and family-reincarnation stories remained highly visible on KakaoPage, while Naver Webtoon’s official audience-segmented ranking signals showed stronger separation between relationship-driven titles, slice-of-life titles, action fantasy, and martial-arts fantasy. On the English side, WEBTOON’s official Trending chart showed Korean-origin and Korean-style translated series competing directly with English-native and non-Korean series, so the English ranking below filters for Korean webtoons or Korean-webtoon-adjacent licensed titles rather than copying the whole platform chart.

Korea Takeaway

KakaoPage’s top 50 is heavily tilted toward romance fantasy, reincarnation, family-position stories, contract marriage, villainess narratives, and child-protagonist family fantasy. At the same time, action fantasy remains structurally important: 후작가의 역대급 막내아들, 픽 미 업!, 철혈검가 사냥개의 회귀, 회귀자 사용설명서, 갓 오브 블랙필드, 템빨, 무당기협, 나 혼자만 레벨업, 묵향 다크레이디, and 재앙급 영웅님이 귀환하셨다 all show that progression fantasy, martial-arts fantasy, and game-system stories are still major anchors.

Naver’s official homepage data complicates the picture. Its audience-segmented ranking snapshot showed relationship, diary, and everyday-life titles leading some female cohorts, while action fantasy and martial-arts fantasy led male cohorts. That means a single KakaoPage list should not be read as “the Korean market” by itself; it is better understood as one strong commercial signal inside a broader multi-platform ecosystem.

English Ranking — WEBTOON English Official Trending, Filtered for Korean Webtoons and Korean-Webtoon-Adjacent Titles

WEBTOON English’s official Trending page exposed 30 ranked titles. Because the chart includes Korean-origin series, English-native WEBTOON Originals, Western licensed properties, and non-Korean creator works, I filtered for Korean webtoons and Korean-webtoon-adjacent titles when identifiable from the official title pages and franchise context. English-Market Takeaway

The English chart is more launch-sensitive than the Korean chart. WEBTOON’s Trending list rewards update cadence, discoverability, title packaging, and strong hooks, which is why newer or recently active series can outrank older franchise titles. In this cycle, the strongest Korean-webtoon signals in English clustered around fantasy romance, villainess/game-world setups, apocalypse inventory fantasy, action leveling, school or chaebol thrillers, and healing-family fantasy. WEBTOON’s title pages also show recent episode drops inside the reporting window for top titles such as One Day, My Sister Died and Villainess Streamer, which likely helped keep them high on the Trending chart.

Reader Trends and Issues from the Past Two Weeks

1. Romance fantasy stayed dominant, but Korea is not a one-genre market

The KakaoPage list was especially strong for romance fantasy and family-status stories, with repeated motifs around noble families, succession, adoption, marriage contracts, villainess framing, reincarnation, and child-centered household fantasy. But the same ranking still had a durable action spine, including 나 혼자만 레벨업, 템빨, 갓 오브 블랙필드, 픽 미 업!, 무당기협, and 재앙급 영웅님이 귀환하셨다. Naver’s official audience-segmented signals further suggest that action fantasy and martial-arts fantasy remain especially strong among male cohorts, while relationship-forward and everyday-life titles performed strongly elsewhere.

2. Anti-piracy enforcement became the biggest platform-level story

The most consequential business issue this period was the escalation in overseas anti-piracy enforcement. Korea JoongAng Daily reported on April 27 that a Spanish court shut down one of the largest Spanish-language illegal webtoon sites, describing it as the first successful foreign-jurisdiction legal action by Korean rights holders. The report named Naver Webtoon, Kakao Entertainment, Lezhin, Ridi, Kidari Studio, Toomics, Topco Media, and the Copyright Overseas Promotion Association among the participating entities.

The Korea Herald also reported that Newtokki, one of Korea’s major illegal webtoon sites, abruptly shut down in late April. Together, the Spanish-language case and domestic-site closures suggest that webtoon companies are treating piracy as a global licensing and revenue problem, not just a local takedown problem.

3. Simultaneous release and faster localization are becoming anti-piracy tools

The Spanish-language piracy case is especially important because it connects enforcement with distribution strategy. Chosun Biz reported that the targeted Spanish-language piracy site had about 86 million monthly visits, and that Naver Webtoon and Kakao Entertainment participated in the coordinated action. This supports a broader industry trend: major Korean platforms are trying to reduce the gap between Korean release and overseas access, because long localization delays create room for illegal translations to dominate search and social discovery.

4. Adaptation momentum is expanding beyond Korea, Japan, and the U.S.

Adaptation buzz this period was unusually international. Korea JoongAng Daily reported that ShootAround, originally published on Naver’s English-language platform, is set for a live-action film adaptation by Lion Forge Entertainment and Webtoon Entertainment. That matters because it reverses the usual pipeline: instead of a Korean hit moving outward, an English-platform WEBTOON title is moving into film development.

India also emerged as a major adaptation market. Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Love Always, based on Kakao webtoon 다시 만난 세계 (Here We Go Again), is set to become the first Indian series based on a Korean webtoon and is planned for release in the second half of 2026. The Korea Herald similarly reported that the series is planned for JioHotstar, marking a new Korea-to-India webtoon IP route.

5. English readers are rewarding clear hooks

The English WEBTOON chart shows a bias toward titles with instantly readable premises: a dead sister and a monstrous prince, a villainess inside a livestreamed game, a chaebol-school undercover setup, apocalypse warehouse storage, and action-system universes. This is not just a genre trend; it is a packaging trend. The strongest English-market performers often explain their premise in the title or first-line concept, making them easier to click in a crowded app environment.

What to Watch Next

First, watch whether KakaoPage’s child-centered family fantasy titles remain clustered near the top or rotate out as newer launches take over. The current top 50 contains enough similar premises that a shift in only a handful of titles could change the visible chart mood quickly.

Second, track whether Naver’s action and martial-arts fantasy leaders convert into stronger English ranking performance. Infinite Leveling: Murim charted on WEBTOON English Trending this cycle, while KakaoPage’s domestic list also kept multiple progression and combat-fantasy titles visible. That cross-market overlap is worth monitoring.

Third, follow the anti-piracy story. The Spanish court case, Newtokki shutdown, and coordinated platform messaging all point toward a more aggressive rights-protection phase. If platforms pair legal enforcement with faster official translations, English, Spanish, and Southeast Asian markets could see more simultaneous or near-simultaneous releases.

Fourth, watch India. Love Always could become a test case for whether Korean webtoon IP can travel not only as comics or Korean dramas, but as locally produced streaming drama formats outside East Asia.
