Autumn has arrived for those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere. And as the seasons change, so does the world around us. For many, this transition period means cooler temperatures and crisp air. Some of us get to enjoy trees changing color. If that color change also means the onerous task of raking fallen leaves? Everything has a price.

For some people, autumn is synonymous with a spooky season—when we celebrate all things creepy and terrifying. But for others, this season means back to school. We’re currently living through strange times so going back to school might not look the same as it has in previous years but like it or not, summer has ended and students must continue their education.

Given how our time in educational institutions makes up a significant portion of our formative years, is it any surprise that school often serves as the setting for novels, movies, and webtoons? It’s a universal setting that most people are familiar with, no matter their age. So to celebrate this time of the year, let’s check out these webtoons set in high school.

Lookism by Taejun Pak
Lookism explores society’s obsession with beauty and how it leads to differential treatment between those considered attractive and those not. Daniel Park starts out in the latter category. He’s unpopular, fat, and constantly bullied by his classmates. The situation becomes so bad that he transfers schools in hopes of starting fresh somewhere else. What he didn’t expect was that he’d wake up in an entirely new body! Now tall, physically fit, and handsome, Daniel finally gets to experience just how well you’re treated when you’re considered attractive. Don’t think he was miraculously turned hot, though. Daniel gained another separate body—which means he switches between his attractive one during the day and his original, plainer one at night.

Get Schooled by Yongtaek Chae and Garam Han
We move on from social commentary about beauty standards to exploration about today’s educational institutions. In Get Schooled, a government task force has been created to tackle problematic high schools. What does problematic mean in this context? High schools where teachers have lost control of the student population, so bullying has become rampant and obtaining an education has taken a backseat to survive the resulting toxic environment. Hwajin Na, one of the task force’s agents, takes readers on an action-packed ride as he goes from school to school, fixing the dysfunction with justice and an occasional well-placed fist.

Seasons of Blossom by Hongduck and Nemone
If you live in a region where you experience all four seasons of the year, so too will your educational life transition through those periods. This webtoon follows the pains and joys of life and love as you also navigate through high school. Through four interconnected arcs, we meet a popular tall girl who fake dates her shorter classmate to spare her best friend’s feelings and revisit the past when a young man befriends his dead older brother’s almost-girlfriend. The second story arc—or season—recently ended, so there’s no better time to start than now.

The World Is Money and Power by Dongwoo Han and Dohee Lee
Gunwoo Dan is the illegitimate son of a politician. As a result of a scandal, he transfers from the high school he was set to attend to another one filled with children of the rich and elite. Doesn’t sound like a punishment, does it? Except there’s something else about this school: students don’t come here to learn. They come here to learn how to exert influence and power through gambling and bullying. Gunwoo plans to change all that—and maybe get some revenge along the way—but that might be easier said than done when his classmates are invested in making sure he fails.

Your Smile Is a Trap by Aengo
Kiyu has spent years training to become an idol. But when he leaves that life, he decides he wants to enjoy life as a regular high school student. That’s difficult when you have a face like his, though, so he dons a pair of glasses to hide good looks. Alas, Kiyu soon learns how hard it is to navigate life and school when you don’t have good looks to fall back on. Combined with his social awkwardness—he didn’t have time to polish his social skills during the highly structured life of an idol trainee!—he’s having a hard time. Things become even more complicated when he meets his classmate, and next-door neighbor, Lily, who has a reputation for being a bully. But just as Kiyu’s glasses hide his true looks, Lily’s forbidding aura hides a good heart.

And there you have it: a variety of webtoons set in high school to bring you back into that educational state of mind. Have other recommendations? Let us know in the comments!
