Whether readers know it or not, webtoons—or Korean comics—have made an international splash in recent years. Diving into the new Korean drama, True Beauty? Guess what? It’s based on a webtoon series by Yaongyi. Or are you an avid anime fan who stumbled across a show named Tower of God on Crunchyroll? Surprise! The fantasy adventure isn’t based on a manga from Japan, but on a Korean webtoon by S.I.U.

The explosion of live action and animated shows based on Korean webtoons means there is no better time to dive into this colorful world of dynamic and interesting stories. Even better, the barrier of entry is low. These days, most Korean comics occupy the digital space. In fact, unlike many other types of comics, webtoons are optimized for mobile reading. No squinting to read tiny speech bubbles. No straining your eyes to parse detailed comic panels better suited to the print format. This means anyone with a cell phone can read webtoons with minimal effort and few headaches.

This is all well and good, but you might be wondering where you can read webtoons. Luckily, many online platforms exist. Legal ones, even. Say goodbye to the days of relying on virus-laden, ad-glutted illegal comic aggregators to get your webtoon fix. Today, legitimate webtoon platforms allow users to read webtoons for free or a reasonable fee. We should respect the hard work that webtoon creators put into their series and make sure they get compensated, after all.

Platforms Where You Can Read Webtoons

Webtoon

The name says it all. Webtoon is probably the most well-known of the existing webtoon platforms. The aforementioned Tower of God and True Beauty originally debuted on the site. Webtoon offers its content for free, but users can read recent installments early via its paid Fast Pass system.

Tapas

Tapas offers both webtoons and webnovels. The site contains a mix of free and paid content and offers a wide variety of series, including titles that tap into popular trends like the transmigration romance, Beware the Villainess. Like other webtoon platforms, Tapas utilizes a coin system—dubbed Tapas Ink—to handle its paid content.

Tappytoon

On Tappytoon, you can find free series, mature series, and even webtoons based on popular webnovels. One of the most well-known series on the platform is the popular gaming fantasy, Solo Leveling.

Lezhin Comics

While Lezhin Comics does offer free content, this site is best known for offering quality webtoons for a premium price. Never fear, though! In addition to allowing users to preview chapters before committing to buying more, it also presents a rotating selection of free series and chapters.

ToryComics

While users can preview a few select series on the website, the main way to read webtoons on this platform is via its app. Makes sense, right? If webtoons are made to be read on cell phones, why wouldn’t you use its app? Like other platforms, it features a variety of genres including Raid and Sovereign of Judgment.

Toomics

Like other sites, Toomics hosts a variety of genres, but it specializes in spicy, mature series. If you like your webtoons on the sexy side, this is the platform to use.

Netcomics

While Netcomics may not be as well-known as other platforms on this list, it’s certainly not the newest. Netcomics first made its international debut as a publisher of printed manhwa in the late 2000s. But since the market has shifted toward digital webtoons, so has the platform. Its catalog includes the highly anticipated transmigration romance The Destroyer Fell in Love with Me and forthcoming BL series My Golden Knight.

With the plethora of webtoons out there, it’s easy to see why readers may feel overwhelmed. Thankfully, these sites make them easily available and accessible in English—and often other languages—all over the world. If you’ve always wanted to read webtoons, any of these sites are a great place to start.
