Who doesn’t love to read a good fantasy story? Sometimes we just need an escape from our mundane lives. The best thing about the fantasy genre is that it can take multiple forms. One fantasy story might take place in a completely different world full of kings, queens, and dragons. Another fantasy story might be set on a modern-day Earth where magic is real and magical creatures walk the streets. There’s an option for everyone! Best of all, fantasy stories come in multiple formats for us to enjoy: fantasy novels, fantasy movies, and fantasy webtoons.

If you’re not familiar with webtoons, you might not realize they’re not all romantic dramas. Some of the most popular series fall into the fantasy genre. It’s the perfect vehicle for them. Beautiful visuals can bring these amazing stories to life. Even if you consider yourself an avid webtoon expert, you might be intimidated by the vast number of fantasy series and don’t know where to start. To help you out, here’s a list of fantasy webtoons to check out.

Dragonsitter by Zica

As the title suggests, this webtoon is about a young girl named Corette who starts a new job: looking after the last living dragon on Earth! Unfortunately for her, the dragon—Axela—wants nothing to do with humans. He especially doesn’t want to deal with meddling humans who want to run his life. He’s surly. He’s a low-key alcoholic. And perhaps most telling of all, he’s used to his solitude. A little strange for a dragon famous for saving the kingdom from its enemies. Lucky for us readers eager to know about his mysterious of all, Corette isn’t so easily dissuaded from her new mission in life.

My Roommate Is a Gumiho by NA

Recently adapted into a K-drama, this webtoon tells the story of Dam Lee and Wuyeo Shin. Dam Lee is a regular college student. Wuyeo Shin is not. In fact, he’s a 900-year-old nine-tailed fox on the verge of becoming human. Too bad for him that a chance encounter results in his bead—the source of his power—being transferred accidentally to Dam. Now they have one year to find a way to return the bead to its rightful owner. Otherwise, Wuyeo will never become human, and Dam will die. In the meantime? Dam and Wuyeo become roommates. If you like a healthy dose of comedy with your fantasy, this is the series for you. It helps that Dam’s reactions to her new life circumstances are extremely relatable.

Men of the Harem by Alphatart and Yeongbin

Best known for their other fantasy series, The Remarried Empress, Alphatart’s new series gives us more political intrigue and complicated romantic relationships. For years, Latil thought she was going to marry her childhood sweetheart. Alas, her dreams die when her beloved breaks off their relationship and marries someone else. As if that weren’t enough to deal with, Latil finds herself ruler of the kingdom when her father is assassinated. Still enraged by her former lover’s betrayal, Latil uses her new position to create a harem. Previous rulers have had multiple partners so why can’t she? But juggling the competing interests of the men who’ve joined her harem might be a lot when she’s also trying to uncover the plot surrounding her father’s death and her ex’s betrayal.

See You in my 19th Life by Lee Hey

While reincarnation is a common theme in fantasy webtoons, Lee Hey’s series puts a new spin on it. Not only has Jieum Ban been reincarnated, she’s been reincarnated 19 times. Even more astonishing, she remembers all 18 of her previous lives. However, her 18th life was cut tragically short and left her with many regrets. Even more surprisingly, she was reincarnated shortly after her 18th life’s death, giving her the opportunity to reconnect with people with her past life. It remains to see whether this is a good idea, a terrible mistake, or a necessary course of action. Why, you ask? Because her previous life’s death might not have been an accident and the plot that took her life might still be targeting those dear to her.

Your Throne by SAM

Lady Medea Solon thought she was going to marry Crown Prince Eros, but in a shocking turn of events, she loses him when he chooses to marry another. Now, you might think you’ve heard this story before. You haven’t. First appearances can be deceiving. Your Throne isn’t the story of a scorned woman trying to win back a lost lover. Medea isn’t an innocent, naive heroine in need of saving. The crown prince isn’t someone to admire or swoon over. And the woman who won the prince’s heart isn’t Medea’s rival and enemy. In fact, she might not have the prince’s love at all. Your Throne may not be what you expect, but it’s a fantastic story about an ambitious woman who intends to win it all and woe to anyone who gets in her way.

As you can see, there are a wide variety of fantasy webtoons out there that reflect the variety of stories found in the genre. Hopefully, these suggestions have you a new series to love and binge!
