Who doesn’t love a good thriller? Heart-pounding action. Unpredictable twists and turns. Unexpected alliances and betrayals. Thrillers provide exciting stories for us to enjoy all year round. Most of the time, movies or novels come to mind when we think of the thriller genre but guess what? Serialized stories are the perfect vehicle for thrillers. The bite-sized installments both prolong the suspense while giving us a chance to catch our breath when the intensity gets to be too much. That’s where thriller webtoons come in.
Thriller webtoons give us the best of both worlds: stunning visuals that capture the action and suspense we love from film but in short installments that we can read at our convenience. No making time to buy tickets and sit in a theater or blocking off an entire afternoon to read a book. Instead, we can read thriller webtoons during our afternoon commute, when we’re waiting for a doctor’s appointment, or even during our lunch break and still have time left over. What’s not to love?
That said, there are a lot of thriller webtoons available and it can get overwhelming fast. To get you started in this awesome genre, here are some suggestions of series to follow.
Delusion by Hongjacga
Before Hongjacga penned Space Sweepers, the webtoon that inspired the Netflix series, he created this gripping story of an artist hired to paint a portrait of a beautiful, but reclusive, woman. Delusion combines intriguing mystery, bittersweet romance, and supernatural horror to great effect. If you don’t like too much action in your thrillers and prefer a more psychological take on the genre, this is the webtoon for you. What’s even better? It’s complete! You can binge this story of a tragically doomed woman from start to finish, if you like.
Shotgun Boy by Carnby Kim and Hongpil
Carnby Kim has written several thriller webtoons including Bastard, about the son of a serial killer, and Sweet Home, about a suicidal teenager who—along with the other residents of his apartment building—tries to survive an apocalypse in which people turn into monsters. If the latter sounds vaguely familiar to you, there’s a good reason. Like Space Sweepers, Sweet Home has also been adapted into a Netflix series. Shotgun Boy is the prequel to Sweet Home and being a prequel, it doesn’t require any prior knowledge of the world. It follows a boy who’s been heavily bullied by his classmates. While on a school trip, his fortune takes a turn when he discovers a shotgun and ammunition. But his dreams of retribution are cut short when monsters begin taking over and killing his classmates. Now the question is whether our protagonist decides to save his classmates from their unlucky fates.
Fast Forward by Porto and Junki Hong
The science fiction genre has given us some of the best thrillers, and Fast Forward is no exception. In this recently launched webtoon, a handful of people have been given superpowers related to time. The problem? There can only be one master of time. What does this mean? To survive, the people with these time-related powers must find the others and kill them. By killing them, the murderer then gains their abilities. It’s straightforward enough but our heroine didn’t pay attention to the conditions of her new circumstances. She only finds out after someone she trusted tries to kill her. Now, she must play the most terrible game of catch-up ever—all while staying alive. She may have an ally, but this relationship comes with its own risks. After all, her new ally has time-related abilities too. Doesn’t that mean he’ll need to kill her eventually?
It’s Mine by LuckS
At first glance, this looks like a story a boy and his obsessive crush on a girl. Many people will be turned off by that premise. Understandable, considering how toxic relationships and stalker love interests are polarizing plot elements. But don’t let the first few chapters of this series lull you into thinking that’s all this webtoon is about. Our protagonist, Yohan Do, may have a reason for what he’s doing and it’s not just because he must win the girl at all costs and by any means necessary.
