Seneca and Hermann Hesse led a month of durable backlist demand, while Korean fiction, children’s publishing and advance-order books widened the bestseller shelf.
September’s Korean book charts were not controlled by a single release cycle. Philosophy and literary backlist remained at the top of the completed monthly lists, but new Korean fiction and a major children’s-series installment gained enough momentum to sit beside them.
The retailer surfaces are not interchangeable. YES24 reports calendar-month online and store sales. Kyobo Book Centre publishes separate online and combined monthly charts. Aladin describes its monthly list as the domestic books most purchased by customers during the selected month, and its chart can include advance orders. The positions below therefore remain retailer-specific.
YES24: Seneca led a backlist-heavy top ten
YES24’s completed September domestic-books chart placed 세네카, 오늘을 빼앗기고 있는 당신에게 (Seneca, For You Who Are Losing Today; working translation) at No. 1. 싯다르타 (Siddhartha) rose to No. 2, giving a 2002 Korean edition of Hermann Hesse’s novel the month’s second position.
The retailer’s September top ten was:
- 세네카, 오늘을 빼앗기고 있는 당신에게 (Seneca, For You Who Are Losing Today; working translation)
- 싯다르타 (Siddhartha)
- 흔한남매 23 (Heunhan Nammae 23; working translation)
- 그랬다고 적었다 (I Wrote That It Was So; working translation)
- 니체의 초월자 (Nietzsche’s Overman; working translation)
- 마음의 어휘력 (The Vocabulary of the Heart; working translation)
- 모순 (Contradictions)
- 한국사 이상현상 연구원 (Korean History Anomaly Research Institute; working translation)
- 2026 큰별쌤 최태성의 별별한국사 한국사능력검정시험 심화 상 (Choi Tae-sung’s Korean History Proficiency Test, Advanced, Vol. 1; working translation)
- 2026 큰별쌤 최태성의 별별한국사 한국사능력검정시험 심화 하 (Choi Tae-sung’s Korean History Proficiency Test, Advanced, Vol. 2; working translation)
Four of those positions went to philosophical or literary backlist: Seneca, Hesse, Nietzsche and 양귀자’s 모순 (Contradictions). The two Korean-history exam books at Nos. 9 and 10 are a reminder that the overall list measures domestic-book demand rather than a general-reading category alone.
The largest retailer-displayed moves belonged to 마음의 어휘력, up 117 places, and 한국사 이상현상 연구원, up 324. Those figures describe changes in YES24 rank, not unit-sales growth.
Kyobo: Korean speculative fiction and Hesse were visible online
Kyobo Book Centre’s completed online monthly chart covers September 1–30. On that surface, 최인서’s 한국사 이상현상 연구원 (Korean History Anomaly Research Institute; working translation) reached No. 3 and 싯다르타 (Siddhartha) placed No. 4.
The pairing matters because it shows two different kinds of durability. Hesse’s novel was sustained by renewed backlist attention, while 최인서’s August release moved quickly through a newer blend of Korean historical material, institutional-document form and speculative horror. Kyobo marked both titles with merchandising labels, so their chart positions and their retailer promotion should be read as separate signals.
Kyobo’s combined monthly surface covered September 2–29 rather than the full calendar month. That difference is one reason not to merge its ranks with YES24 or Aladin into a synthetic national list.
Aladin: Korean fiction, children’s books and an advance order shared the top ten
Aladin’s September monthly domestic-books chart also placed Seneca first. Its top ten was:
- 세네카, 오늘을 빼앗기고 있는 당신에게 (Seneca, For You Who Are Losing Today; working translation)
- 한국사 이상현상 연구원 (Korean History Anomaly Research Institute; working translation)
- 그랬다고 적었다 (I Wrote That It Was So; working translation)
- 흔한남매 23 (Heunhan Nammae 23; working translation)
- 가호 (Blessing; working translation)
- 싯다르타 (Siddhartha)
- 서리꽃 세트 (Frost Flower, two-volume set; working translation)
- 클래식 뮤지컬 차이콥스키의 발레곡 호두까기 인형 사운드북 (The Nutcracker sound book; working translation)
- 박완서의 낱말들 (The Words of Park Wan-suh; working translation)
- 찌니주의보 (Jjini Warning; working translation)
Aladin’s list broadens the September picture. Five of its top ten positions went to Korean fiction or literary prose. The children’s and family market also occupied two positions through 흔한남매 23 and the Nutcracker sound book.
The No. 5 position requires a qualification. 무라카미 하루키’s 가호 (Blessing; working translation) carried an October publication date and appeared as an advance order. Its rank is evidence of September purchasing activity, not a September publication date.
Aladin also applied its “Choice” label to 한국사 이상현상 연구원 and 찌니주의보. That badge is a merchandising signal; it does not alter or explain the chart rank by itself.
Fiction and nonfiction moved on different clocks
September’s strongest nonfiction signal was philosophical backlist. Seneca led YES24 and Aladin, while Nietzsche remained in YES24’s top five. These books were not isolated category leaders; they held high positions on broad domestic-book lists.
Fiction was more dispersed. Hesse’s 싯다르타 appeared near the top across retailers, while Korean writing supplied much of Aladin’s top ten: 최인서, 김애란, 조정래, 박완서 and 정지아. No single label explains those books. They range from documentary-form speculative fiction to essays and multigenerational literary narrative.
Children’s publishing produced the clearest new-release interruption. 흔한남매 23 reached No. 3 at YES24 and No. 4 at Aladin despite arriving during the month. Its rapid placement reflects the advantage of an established series with a returning audience, without revealing how many copies were sold.
The completed charts therefore show three simultaneous forms of demand: durable recommendation for classics and philosophy, concentrated attention around recognizable series, and strong retailer-specific movement for new Korean literary titles. September was less a reset than a widening of the shelf.
