August’s release histories and official platform charts show Korean webtoons traveling through two systems at once: dependable weekly serialization and fast-moving rediscovery.

The most revealing Korean webtoon signal after August was not a single new franchise. It was the return of familiar work through new chart positions, renewed seasons and English-language discovery.

WEBTOON’s English Trending chart was led by Korean adaptations and long-running Korean series. (OVERGEARED) moved to No. 1 during a rapid English episode rollout. (Who Made Me a Princess) was No. 2 after releasing four weekly episodes in August. (The Lazy Lord Masters the Sword) returned with a new season and entered at No. 3.

This was not a monthly sales chart. It was a post-period discovery signal, read alongside official episode histories from August. Some titles were building momentum through regular weekly releases. Others were positioned for a new-season restart. Together they show how a digital catalog can behave less like an archive than a set of doors that platforms reopen.

How This Report Reads the Charts

The reporting period is August 1–31, 2026. The official platforms used here do not expose comparable archived monthly audience totals, so this report does not manufacture a unified August ranking.

It uses three separate official signals:

  • Kakao Webtoon’s in-period real-time ranking.
  • Naver Webtoon’s official romance Popular list and title pages.
  • WEBTOON’s English Trending chart in the United States, with official episode histories used to confirm August activity.

No cross-platform weighting is applied. Kakao and Naver show domestic discovery through different surfaces; the English chart measures rapidly changing attention, not cumulative readership. Repeated titles are retained when their appearance across markets is itself evidence. The tables are ranking snapshots and release records, not sales estimates.

Kakao Webtoon: Efficient Premises Held the Middle

Kakao Webtoon’s in-period real-time top 10 split between crime and workplace drama, family-centered romance fantasy, martial arts and return narratives.

Rank Title
(Killer Housewife)
(Hell Employee)
(I Saw a Play)
(Marriage of Convenience 2: The Unforgotten Song)
(Lord of Money)
(The Namgung Clan’s Genius Grandson)
(The Surgeon Who Became Hua Tuo)
(I Shall Master This Family!)
(The Baby Raises a Villain)
(The Indomitable Martial King)

The list rewarded premises that explain their leverage immediately. A surgeon carries modern knowledge into the past. A family strategist gets another life. A martial hero returns with experience intact. Even the chart’s crime and workplace leaders place their contradiction in the title: a killer who is also a married woman, and office life recast as damnation.

That economy matters in a crowded app. The title is not merely a label; it is the first piece of user-interface copy. It has to make a serial engine visible before a reader opens the first episode.

Naver Webtoon: Romance Kept Its Durable Shelf

Naver’s romance Popular list continued to favor contemporary pressure, secrecy and unequal relationships. The leading group remained anchored by titles already active through August.

Rank Title
(Childhood Friend Complex)
(Tears on a Withered Flower)
(Stories: Relationship Rules)
(Greedy)
(Bad Dog)

The continuity is useful. These are not titles that need an elaborate fantasy taxonomy before the conflict becomes clear. They begin with friendship turning unstable, marriage under betrayal and debt, stories about the rules people break, or desire sharpened by power.

In July, KLitReads found a visible bridge between this domestic romance shelf and WEBTOON’s English Popular chart. In the September Trending chart, that bridge widened into a more mixed export lane. Romance remained prominent, but action, horror, regression and revived back catalogues moved faster.

WEBTOON English: Korean Series Filled the Fast Lane

Korean-origin titles occupied a large majority of the top 15 positions on WEBTOON’s English Trending chart.

Rank Korean title and official English title Category
(OVERGEARED) Fantasy
(Who Made Me a Princess) Romance
(The Lazy Lord Masters the Sword) Fantasy
(The Genius Wants an Ordinary Life) Slice of life
(The Stellar Swordmaster) Action
(I’m Not a Soccer Genius!) Sports
(Jungle Juice) Action
(Trapped) Thriller
(44th Period: Survival Class) Horror
(Absolute Regression) Fantasy
(The Fox Club) Romance

The distribution is broader than July’s romance-heavy overlap. Fantasy and action take five of the eleven positions, while horror, thriller, sports, slice of life and romance each keep a lane. The chart does not say that English readers abandoned romance. It shows that discovery accelerated around series with distinct relaunch or release mechanics.

(OVERGEARED) is the clearest example. Its English page was releasing episodes daily in September, turning a large Korean franchise into a rapid onboarding event. (The Lazy Lord Masters the Sword) returned from a long break with a season premiere on September 4. Both reached the top three through a burst of availability rather than the ordinary weekly rhythm used by most titles.

(Who Made Me a Princess), (The Genius Wants an Ordinary Life) and 별을 품은 소드마스터 (The Stellar Swordmaster) each released four English episodes in August. Their September positions make the case for routine rather than spectacle: weekly serialization keeps giving an established series another chance to surface.

Three August Patterns

Back catalogues are active inventory

A completed or established Korean property does not become inert when its first domestic run ends. Translation, renewed licensing, platform migration, a new season or a faster release schedule can make it behave like a new title for another audience.

This changes how “newness” should be read on a digital chart. A reader may be encountering a decade-old property for the first time, while the platform presents it beside a newly launched series. The catalog becomes programmable.

Serialization is distribution

The four August releases recorded for several top English titles were not just an editorial schedule. Each episode created a new notification, chart input and point of return. Consistency gives a translated series repeated opportunities to be discovered.

Daily release bursts intensify that effect. They lower the wait between early episodes, help a large backlog feel navigable and give recommendation systems fresh activity to measure. The release calendar is part of the export strategy.

Genre travel is getting less narrow

July’s strongest visible Korea-to-English bridge was romance. The post-period Trending snapshot is more plural. Martial fantasy, game fantasy, horror, action, sports and domestic drama all appear around Korean work.

That breadth reduces dependence on a single genre cycle. It also makes localization more demanding. A romance title can travel through emotional pressure; a martial or game-system series must make its rules readable; a horror series depends on rhythm and tone. The export market is no longer one shelf.

What August Revealed

August’s webtoon market was built from repetition with variation. Domestic discovery still rewarded immediately legible premises. Naver’s romance shelf continued to favor relationship pressure. English-language discovery, meanwhile, expanded toward a mixed group of Korean titles whose weekly runs, new seasons or release bursts made older properties newly visible.

The practical lesson is that Korean webtoon exports do not move only when a new hit is born. They move when platforms give existing work another front door. Rights, translation, episode cadence and chart placement can reactivate a catalog one title at a time.
