YES24’s monthly chart favored Seneca and Homer, while Kyobo’s last complete August week produced a new No. 1 in 최인서’s 한국사 이상현상 연구원. Aladin’s current list showed the same late-month shift.

Korean bookselling in August was split between durable backlist reading and fast-moving new releases. Philosophy and classics occupied an unusually large share of YES24’s monthly top positions. Fiction remained strong at Kyobo Book Centre. At the end of the month, a new Korean genre novel moved directly to the top of Kyobo’s chart and Aladin’s current list.

YES24: philosophy and Homer dominate the monthly chart

YES24’s domestic-books monthly chart put 세네카, 오늘을 빼앗기고 있는 당신에게 (Seneca, For You Who Are Losing Today; working translation) at No. 1 for August, up eight places from the preceding comparison shown by the retailer. The volume selects and rearranges passages from Seneca through a contemporary Korean editorial frame.

Homer followed in two editions. 오디세이아 (The Odyssey), the Park Moon-jae translation published by Hyundai Jisung, ranked No. 2 after a 370-place rise. A new Kim Heon translation titled 오뒷세이아 (The Odyssey) entered at No. 3. YES24 also linked the titles to its film-related promotion, but the chart positions are sales rankings; the promotion is a separate merchandising signal.

The remainder of the top ten reinforced the mix of philosophy, literary backlist and fiction:

  1. 세네카, 오늘을 빼앗기고 있는 당신에게 (Seneca, For You Who Are Losing Today; working translation)
  2. 오디세이아 (The Odyssey), translated by Park Moon-jae
  3. 오뒷세이아 (The Odyssey), translated by Kim Heon
  4. 싯다르타 (Siddhartha)
  5. 니체의 초월자 (Nietzsche’s Overman; working translation)
  6. 투명한 나선 (A Transparent Spiral; working translation)
  7. 그랬다고 적었다 (I Wrote That It Was So; working translation)
  8. 모순 (Contradictions)
  9. 원소 원정대: 118개 캐릭터로 마스터하는 주기율표 공략집 (Element Expedition; working translation)
  10. 수족관 (Aquarium; working translation)

The visible month-over-month movements were substantial: the Hyundai Jisung 오디세이아 rose 370 places; 투명한 나선 rose 12; 모순 rose 15; and the children’s chemistry title 원소 원정대 rose 263. The retailer exposes direction and magnitude, not unit sales, so the jumps show relative movement rather than market size.

Two demand patterns stand out. First, multiple editions of the same classical work can rise together when a screen adaptation or related media event renews attention. Second, philosophy was not confined to a specialist list: Seneca and Nietzsche placed inside the overall domestic-books top five.

Kyobo Book Centre: a late-month Korean genre debut takes No. 1

Kyobo’s chart for August 19–25 gave No. 1 to 최인서’s 한국사 이상현상 연구원 (Korean History Anomaly Research Institute; working translation) in its first chart week. The publisher-supplied description on Ridi presents it as records from a secret organization investigating anomalies at palaces, tombs, temples and traditional family houses, and notes that its Postype serialization drew 550,000 readers. Kyobo’s weekly release, distributed through Yonhap, likewise connected the debut to an existing online readership.

The complete top ten for that Kyobo period was:

  1. 한국사 이상현상 연구원 (Korean History Anomaly Research Institute; working translation)
  2. 세네카, 오늘을 빼앗기고 있는 당신에게 (Seneca, For You Who Are Losing Today; working translation)
  3. 수족관 (Aquarium; working translation)
  4. 오디세이아 (The Odyssey), Park Moon-jae translation
  5. 그랬다고 적었다 (I Wrote That It Was So; working translation)
  6. 싯다르타 (Siddhartha)
  7. 투명한 나선 (A Transparent Spiral; working translation)
  8. 니체의 초월자 (Nietzsche’s Overman; working translation)
  9. 모순 (Contradictions)
  10. 흔한남매 이무기 4 (Heunhan Nammae Imugi 4; working translation)

The list overlaps heavily with YES24, but the order differs. That difference is useful. Kyobo’s weekly chart captured the immediate impact of two late-August Korean releases: 한국사 이상현상 연구원 at No. 1 and 김애란’s essay collection 그랬다고 적었다 at No. 5. YES24’s full-month aggregation placed the latter at No. 7 and did not show the new genre novel in its top ten.

Fiction held five of Kyobo’s first nine positions if 한국사 이상현상 연구원, 수족관, 투명한 나선, 싯다르타 and 모순 are counted by their retailer categories and form. The result does not establish that fiction outsold nonfiction across the whole month; it describes one complete late-August week.

Aladin: a live snapshot confirms the late-month change

Aladin’s “Now Best” list is not directly comparable to the other two charts. It ranks what customers are buying at the stated moment and can include books, preorders, e-books, music and store goods. At retrieval, 한국사 이상현상 연구원 was No. 1 overall. 그랬다고 적었다 was No. 3, 세네카, 오늘을 빼앗기고 있는 당신에게 No. 4, 절창 (Desperate Song; working translation) No. 5, the Kim Heon 오뒷세이아 No. 6, 찌니주의보 (Jjini Warning; working translation) No. 7, 싯다르타 No. 8 and 칵테일을 마시는 철학자들 (At the Existentialist Café, Korean edition) No. 9. The No. 10 item was stationery, underscoring the list’s mixed-product scope.

Aladin also marked several books with its “Choice” editorial badge, including 한국사 이상현상 연구원, 절창, 오뒷세이아 and 찌니주의보. That badge is an editorial or merchandising distinction, not a sales rank. The position number and the badge should be read separately.

Despite its methodological limits, the snapshot supports one narrow conclusion: the late-month interest in 최인서’s novel was not visible only at Kyobo. It also occupied Aladin’s top current position when observed.

What August suggests about reader demand

August’s clearest cross-retailer theme was not simply “classics are back.” It was the coexistence of three forms of discovery.

Media attention renewed demand for Homer in multiple translations and formats. Contemporary editorial packaging brought Seneca and Nietzsche into the general bestseller field. Online serialization and an existing fan community gave a new Korean genre novel enough momentum to enter a major weekly chart at No. 1.

At the same time, long-selling literary fiction remained visible. 싯다르타 and 모순 appeared in both YES24’s monthly top ten and Kyobo’s late-August weekly top ten, while 싯다르타 also reached No. 8 on Aladin’s live list. These are not one-week releases; their presence indicates sustained rediscovery rather than a single launch cycle.

The charts do not reveal unit sales, market shares or a unified “book of the month.” They do show readers moving between old texts, repackaged ideas and digitally incubated Korean fiction. August was less a contest between backlist and new books than a demonstration of how different discovery systems can put both on the same table.
