The North American webnovel market has become a hot topic in 2021. Earlier this year, South Korean corporation Naver acquired Wattpad while competitor Kakao bought both Radish and Tapas. All three sites have thriving readerships hungry for serialized novels. Even Amazon launched its own serial fiction platform; Kindle Vella opened its doors in July, albeit in a limited fashion. Now, another platform has joined the fray: Tappytoon.
The announcement came unexpectedly, but it shouldn’t be surprising. While Tappytoon is operated by Content First, Naver invested 33.4 billion won in the company earlier this year. Yes, the same Naver that acquired Wattpad. You might think this puts Tappytoon and Wattpad in direct competition with one another, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Wattpad grew out of user-generated stories whereas Tappytoon was previously known as a webtoon platform.
Already a popular platform for webtoons, Tappytoon launched its webnovel offerings in late August. Its current catalog features the original novels that inspired some of the platform’s most popular webtoons.
Dungeon Reset by Daul
Mix Alice in Wonderland, Saw, and videogames and you’ll have something like Dungeon Reset. When 100 average people are summoned to a videogame-style Dungeon, they’re ordered by a sadistic rabbit guide to fight monsters, find supplies, and survive deadly traps. Armed with a puny knife and near-useless skill, Dawoon is lucky to be part of a group. Safety in numbers, after all. But his luck runs out when he’s left behind while the group advances to the next level. This shouldn’t be possible, which means in addition to surviving the dungeon by himself, he must also face a rabbit guide determined to fix this “bug.”
The Reason Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke’s Mansion by Milcha
Eunha transmigrated into a novel. Alas, she transmigrated into a side character who ends up being poisoned by her fiancé. Yikes! Not one to accept this fate, she takes matters into her own hands and strikes a deal with the novel’s original male lead. She’ll pose as his fake fiancée. But will Duke Noah Wynknight actually help her?
Father, I Don’t Want This Marriage by Hong Heesu
Even villainesses deserve a second chance. Juvelian was hated by everyone. Even her own father and lover abandoned her. But just as she’s about to face a pitiful death, she gets a do-over. To avoid repeating her previous fate, she immediately breaks it off with her lover and decides to live an easy life. Alas, not all things go according to plan. Her father intends to marry her off to the crown prince. Juvelian wants nothing to do with that and decides to enter a dating contract with her father’s student. Except he’s not who she thinks he is.
In addition to webnovels based on webtoons familiar to its users, Tappytoon also hosts original webnovels new to English-speaking audiences:
Mariposa by Y.R. Shin
A bestseller in South Korea, this epic fantasy series follows Reuyen, the unassuming daughter of a horse dealer who’s the reincarnation of a queen. Unfortunately, this queen was no benevolent ruler beloved by history. She was a tyrant. Now, Reuyen finds herself torn between two men: the reincarnation of a loyal knight from her past life and a military commander who suspects her of being in league with the enemy. To survive, she must use the knowledge gleaned from her past life to seize control of her destiny once and for all.
The Male Lead Is Mine by KKAMANG KKAMANG
Our heroine transmigrates into a novel where she becomes a side character named Aris. As with most transmigration webnovels, the side character’s original fate isn’t the stuff of dreams. In the original plot, Aris rejects the male lead and lives an unfortunate life as a result. The new Aris refuses to follow in these footsteps and opts to forge a new path. Instead of running away from the male lead, she intends to win his love for herself.
Webnovel readers will be thrilled to see that new episodes for these series, and others, are released 2-3 times a week. Often enough that your serial fiction addiction remains satisfied yet hungry for more. Unlike its webtoon catalog, Tappytoon Novels are exclusive to its mobile apps. Think of it as getting the chance to experience webnovels as they’re meant to be enjoyed: on the go, when you have a spare moment, at any time and any place. And with new titles being added constantly, Tappytoon is sure to become a major player in the English-language webnovel market.
