Korean movies have been turning to Netflix releases instead of theatrical, especially during November and December of 2020. South Korean theaters were open until more recently, when the pandemic forced theatrical releases to be put on hold until next year. However, many successful films such as <#Alive> and <The Call> have been a huge hit among the platform and audiences worldwide. Largely in part with the success of <Parasite> and its amazing Oscar win, there have been many South Korean movies added to Netflix’s streaming service.
With Christmas around the corner, many new South Korean movies have been added to the list. These include many thrillers, romantic comedies, and action films.
Time To Hunt (2020)
Time To Hunt is an action thriller film that was directed by Yoon Sung Hyun. The film is about a group of friends who are hunted down by an unknown killer. They must outsmart the killer and find a way out of the trap. Starring Choi Woo Shik (Parasite) and Lee Je Hoon, the film has been described to create tension and an adrenaline rush for viewers. Lee Je Hoon’s performance nominated him for the 2020 56th Baeksang Arts Awards for best actor.
Tune In For Love (2019)
The romantic comedy film Tune In For Love has been publicly acclaimed as one of the sweetest films of the era. With romantic comedy veteran Jung Hae-In, who has gained popularity through two of his popular romantic comedy dramas Something In The Rain and One Spring Night, the film has been successful in South Korea last year. The film is about two lovers who first meet while working at a bakery in the 1990s. They love listening to the radio station by Yoo Yeol. They fall in love and are separated when they were young, but fate brings them back together again years later. The film has been popular among international audiences through Netflix, labeling the film heartfelt and bittersweet.
Burning (2018)
The film Burning is a critically acclaimed film that is directed by the famous director Lee Chang Dong. The film has been the first Korean film to make it to the 91st Academy Awards’ final nine-film shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film. The film stars Stephen Yeun (The Walking Dead, Okja), Jeon Jeong Seo (The Call) and Yoo Ah In (Alive). The film is a thriller that surrounds a weird meeting between Yoo Ah In and his long lost friend from his past. She wants him to watch her cat and feed him while she is gone to another country. He has feelings for her, so he agrees, but when she comes back to Korea, she brings her boyfriend Stephen Yeun. Mysterious events start to happen as Yoo Ah In tries to figure out the situation.
What Happened To Mr. Cha? (2021)
The film is set to premiere January 1, 2021 on Netflix. The film is directed by director Kim Dong Kyu, and is a comedy film perfect for the holidays. The film is about a man named Mr. Cha who had experienced his glory days in the 1990s. In order to get his fame back as an actor, he must work hard to get casted again.
Uncanny Counter (2020)
The film Uncanny Counter premiered on November 28, 2020 on Netflix, and is a film that was directed by You Sun Dong. The film is about a superhero Korean man who has supernatural powers. He and a group of superheroes hunt down evil spirits and villains, while also hanging out at a noodle shop. The film has been adapted from the webtoon series, Uncanny Counter. The film has been popular among audiences for its comedic yet action-packed scenes.
